The History of South Street Gallery

South Street Gallery

South Street Gallery was opened in the early 70's as a centre point for the marketing of pottery to a public that was starting to appreciate the value of an ancient craft being vitalised.

20 potters supplied work, which was sold on a commission basis, thereby keeping the prices low compared with a normal retail outlet and enabling the Gallery to keep it's expenditure levels as the venture was in it's embryonic stage.

A small cottage was purchased in historic South Street, this was outgrown after 4 years, and when a larger two storied building on the corner of Nile and South Street became available for sale the purchase was made and the Gallery shifted to its present site.

As South Street was one of New Zealand's oldest streets, 95% of the houses were still original, moves were undertaken to attempt to preserve the area by home owners. After years of struggle!! The area has now been zoned as a historic precinct by the local council. This has provided a focal point for tourists and locals alike.

The selling of pots, pottery, ceramics, call it whatever, flourished, and as Nelson gained a world-wide reputation for its art and crafts the Gallery has gone from strength to strength providing people from all over the world with quality hand-made pottery to use and enjoy and remember their Nelson "experience".

Over the years artists have come and gone. This has enabled the range to be up to the minute as well as traditional, as each potter is totally different from the next.

Our philosophy

We take pride in the fact that we can lead the market as well as react to changing tastes and no two visits to South Street Gallery are ever the same even if they're only a few weeks apart. The same basic tenet that ruled from day one still applies - "To supply hand-made works that give joy and pleasure both to the maker and user".
